SURPRISE!!!

Phil's 30th birthday was at the beginning of May, and I surprised him by arranging for his brother, Nathan, to come down from Saranac Lake, NY, with his family for a long weekend. It's a really long drive, especially with a 4-yr old, 3-yr old and 1.5-yr old! But we LOVED having them here, and it meant so much to Phil!

The first full day we had with them, we went to the Lazy 5 Ranch, just outside of Charlotte. It's basically a huge zoo. We took a wagon ride through the zoo, and the animals come right up to the wagon to get the feed from you. It's pretty cool :) Our neices, Madison and Noelle, were a little anxious around the big animals, but our nephew, Caleb, was pretty curious.

After the wagon ride, we could wander through a petting zoo area, where we saw more animals, and Noelle got up the nerve to feed a miniature goat:

Shortly after this picture, the camel made the weirdest, nastiest sound I think I have ever heard from a living creature. We later found out that it was chewing it's cud (like cows do, but cows don't make that noise!!) Phil and Kim got pretty good at replicating the sound over the remainder of the weekend.

One surprise that didn't pan out was our hope that Phil's brother, Mark, who lives in Australia, would be able to come for his birthday. I think he and his wife, Lesley, were trying to make it work, but understandably, that's a bit of a difficult trip! We miss them terribly, but thought about them often over the weekend. We even saw a kangaroo at the zoo and thought of stories they've told us about them in Australia :) Hopefully we'll make it to see them one day soon and see a kangaroo in it's natural habitat!

Easter Baby Shower

Over Easter weekend, we went to Greensboro to spend the holiday with Erin's side of the family. Jason, Becky and Emma came down from Maryland, and we took the opportunity to throw a short-notice baby shower for Becky and baby-on-the-way. I SWEAR I tried to narrow down the Emma pictures below, and I even included some of other people, just to prove I have other family ;) But it's still hard to resist the cuteness that is Emma :) Even opening a box of cereal is cute:

Aunt Erin and Uncle Phil had put together a modest Easter basket for Emma to have Easter morning. At least, I though it was modest... Jason and Becky seemed to think I was spoiling her horribly. Would I do that?!?!

Throwing the grass became a fun game, after she got the toys and candy out of the basket:

Misc. Henry Happenings

Spring at the Henry household has meant LOTS of time outside (so I'm not breathing much these days... ugh, allergies), trying to wear out the devil-pup, Nash. It's hard to believe how big he's gotten... he's right at 50 lbs. now! And that's quite a jolt, when he launches himself at you to say hello :) Here are some pics of him playing. He's had a summer haircut since these were taken, but we haven't gotten pictures yet. We'll have to- it's pretty funny :)

Somehow he passed his puppy training class. I'm convinced he bribed the trainer behind our backs somehow. Sorry it's blurry, Nash doesn't hold still for long.

I actually planted flowers this year... usually I avoid plants because I kill them instantly just by being near them. Surprisingly, these did really well! I put tulips and hyacinths next to the house and in the planter at the mailbox (which Phil and I built!). I think they looked quite pretty :) (More tulips came up, but I didn't get a picture)

Beach Weekends

Two of our closest friends, David and Trina, are getting married on April 24th. The guys took David for a bachelor's weekend to Charleston/Folly Beach, SC in March. The very next weekend, a group of ladies took Trina to Ocean Isle Beach, NC for a bachelorette weekend. Both groups had a really good time celebrating our friends :)

The boys had cloudy, cool weather, but there was a cool lighthouse they could see from the beach. They hung out in the town of Folly Beach, trying to impart any wisdom they might have to David regarding the blissful state of matrimony (I believe there was a"Honeymoon Survival Kit" for the groom...) :)

Our girls' trip also had cool weather, but we did get bright sunshine and used that as an excuse to brave the beach despite the wind. We treated Trina to a spa day of manicures/pedicures, then a mexican buffet for dinner, and her lingerie shower afterwards. It was such a fun weekend we are already talking about doing it again next year, even if no one is a bachelorette!

Phil and I both loved the chance to hang out and celebrate David and Trina's upcoming wedding, and we wish our friends a lifetime of love, happiness and God's abundant blessings!! :)

Backpacking Trip (Yes, in December!)

Phil and some friends embarked on a 3 day/2 night adventure into the wilderness of The Great Smoky Mountain National Park to celebrate the 30th birthday of one of the guys. The hiking portion was much more grueling than any of the guys knew they'd be tackling, but each came home safe, mostly uninjured, and appreciative of the time spent with each other.

The National Park Service recently reintroduced elk back into the mountains of North Carolina. The guys were fortunate to see the entire herd bedded down the afternoon they arrived in the park. This bull elk was unalarmed by the vehicle traffic as he grazed in the field.

The backpacking trip followed old trading paths that the Park Service has used for horses throughout the last several decades since the GSM National Park was established. The trails led the guys from the Cataloochee Valley, to the left of the picture above, up and down the mountains to the pinnacle of the ridge in the center of the picture. A total of 22 miles hiked, the second day was the most grueling, at 12 miles on the day, with a final ascent of 2000 ft. over a 2 mile distance.

This picture shows a common sight throughout the excursion: very rugged "trails" that were often little more than seasonal streams. Most of the trails were horse paths, with leaves hiding the rocks underneath.

Campsite #2: on the pinnacle of the highest ridge in the area, 5850 ft. above sea level, at the base of an abandoned Forest Service fire watch tower.


The grueling hike the evening before ended after sunset, with the guys hiking into camp with the aid of headlamps. Since camp was on the pinnacle of a mountain, they knew the view would be amazing from the top of the tower.

This stream was simply too deep to walk across. Fortunately, there was a bridge over troubled water.

All of the guys came home with sore muscles, but with rest and IcyHot the pain was temporary. And the memories of the grueling Day 2 climb mean each guy can now use this adventure as the benchmark for the most difficult hike they've ever completed.

White Christmas!!

I know this post is REALLY late, but Phil and I have both been slammed at work since the new year started. So I apologize for just now getting around to Christmas!

We spent a week in NY with Phil's family for Christmas, and made a quick stop in the NC mountians on our way home to do a Christmas meal with Erin's family. To our excitement, there was snow in both locations! Below is a picture from West Jefferson, NC, and a picture of the sunset as we were getting there after our drive down from NY.


One of the most entertaining parts of the trip was watching Nash play with Lucy, Phil's parents' boxer. Lucy is a complete spaz, and unbelievably, I think she had more energy than Nash!! They wrestled and chased each other every single second they were together, so we had to seperate them quite often, just to let them rest. The only other time they would stop was if you offered food:

We had a wonderful Christmas with Phil's parents, and are so glad we got to spend the holiday with them. We got to visit with lots of his extended family, too, which was really nice. It's hard living so far away!

Phil and I tried to spend as much time as we could outside in the snow. We went to the nearby park, and I laughed at the sign near the front entrance. You don't see this at NC parks:
We went to the sledding hill (yes a designated sledding hill... again, not in NC) and had a blast. The picture below doesn't do it justice- it was SO steep!! I got to the top and wondered what I had gotten myself into! Once I got up my nerve, it was fun going down :) Phil, of course, is a pro. But a bit crazy... I can see how he broke his back sledding in college!


Nash seemed to enjoy the snow, once he got used to it. It was pretty funny watching him try to figure out that he could pee on it... the first few times we took him out, he just wouldn't go because there wasn't any grass! But he eventually understood :) We tried to take him sledding on a small hill at the house, but he wanted none of that. He seemed to love playing and running in the snow, and sticking his nose way down into it and tossing it up in the air. See pics below, of all the white on his face :)

It was a great trip, and we were so excited to see Phil's family and see some snow at the same time :) And of course, we are continuously thankful for the real reason we celebrate Christmas- the birth of Jesus, our Savior! We hope that you all had a wonderful, blessed Christmas, too. And hopefully 2010 is going well :)
